ID-Table 1 Flashcards
what genome is larger: microbial or human?
Microbial, 250 fold
what cellular count is larger: microbiota or human cells?
Microbiota
It is normal for the human oral cavity to house which species?
Candida Spp.
It is normal for the human skin to house which species?
Coagulase- negative staphylococci, staph aureus
It is normal for the GI flora to house?
Enterobacteraceae(e.coli, klebsiella), large bowel- anaerobes(bacteroides and prevotella)
transient microbe-human host interactions?
“passing through” and of little consequence, risk only with continued exposure
Commensal microbe-human interaction?
Microbiota, normal flora,
Pathogen microbe-human interaction?
causes dz in normal individuals, can be part of normal microbiota
Opportunisitic pathogen microbe-human interaction?
microbe that causes dz only in humans who’s immune defenses are compromised
Accidental pathogen microbe-human interaction?
distinguished from human-specific pathogens, because they are not directly or readily transmissible from human to human.
Pathogens have 5 groups
bacteria, viruses, fungi, protozoa, helminths
SPACE organisms
Serratia, Pseudomonas, Acinetobacter, Citrobacter, Enterobacter
MESSY SPECK for Enterobacteriaceae
Morganella, Escherichia, Shigella, Salmonella, Yersinia, Serratia, Proteus, Enterobacter, Citrobacter, and Klebsiella
Sera staf eats kebba ,candy, pasta ,asparagus and corn for Catalase + bacteria
serrata staph Esheria Kelebssela candida pasturella aspergillus cornebacterium
Encapsulated organisms?
Some Killers have Pretty Nice Capsules: Strep Pneumoniae, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, Pseudomonas aeroginosa, Neisseria meningiditis, Cryptococcus neoformans
ENT infections commonly occur?
Sept-Nov especially, but fall and spring
Acute sinusitis and AOM are commonly caused by?
40% S.Pneumoniae, 30%H.Influenzae, 20% M.Catarrhalis, 10% other
pharyngitis is comonly caused by?
Virus! but do need to r/o streptococcus pyogenes infection(GAS)(beta hemolytic)
Influenza is commonly caused by?
Influezaviridae virus
Pharyngitis never has a what?
Cough! cough will indicate URTI
Strep pharyngitis criteria?
Centor criteria: no cough, cervical lymphadenopathy, pharyngeal exudate, fever100.4/38 or higher
Uvula deviation is a sign of what?
Abcess
What are the primary bacterial culprits for acute bronchitis?
40% Strep pneumoniae, 30% H.influ, 20% M. catarrhalis, 10%other; which is the same as AOM and Acute sinusitis
Pulmoary abcesses are primary caused by?
Anaerobes 90%
Pneumonia is primarily caused by?
Strep pneumonia, viral, M.pneumonia, other Atypicals, strep agalactiae(0-2mo age)
