ID Exam 2: Anaerobic Flashcards
Basis of O2 tox for anaerobes
Direct oxidation
Production of H2O2 and superoxide (no enzymes to breakdown)
Lack catalase and dismutase
Will strep and enterococcus grow under anaerobic conditions?
Will E coli and staph grow under anaerobic conditions?
Strep/enterococcus will
E coli and staph will grow, not as well
Formation of anaerobic abcess
Acute: aerobic/faculatative organisms dominate -> febrile, hypotensive
Chronic: Fibrin-encased abscess, anaerobes, polymicrobial
Bacteroides fragilis
Normal gut flora
Common in anaerobic abscesses especially below diaphragm
Aerotolerant, encapsuled
Trauma, perf, colon CA, -itis
Maternal and neonatal tetanus
Infection post partum, usually of umbilical cord
Preventable with vaccine
More common abroad, fatality 80%
Vaccine, hygiene, clean cord practice
Food born botulinum vs. infant/wound?
Preformed toxin compared to local production
Botulinum toxin as bioweapon
Can be aerosolized toxin (not the bugs)
