ICU Flashcards
Hemodynamic Monitoring
Provide information about circulation, perfusion, and oxygenation to balance O2 demand and delivery
ICU patients on continuous HM
Noninvasive Monitoring
BP cuff
ECG
Pulse oximeter
Invasive Monitoring
Arterial or femoral line
Pulmonary artery catheter (Swan Ganz)
Venous Lines
IJ access
Subclavian access
Peripheral IV line
PICC line
Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter
Longer delivery of drugs (continued IV antibiotic drugs)
No pool therapy
Care needs to be taken with these
Ventilatory Support
Delivery of breathing support and suction
Ambu Bag
Transmits air manually
Gives 10-12 breaths per minute
Nasal Cannula
Supply rate 1-5 L per minute
Face Mask
Supply rate 5-10 per minute
Venturi Mask
Mixed oxygen with room air
Constant FiO2
Ventilator
Used for supplemental oxygen and breathing support
Ventilation Support
Positive End Expiratory Pressure
Continuous Positive Airway Pressure
Pressure Support
Tracheostomy
For patients who need long time airway support
Endotracheal Intubation
Oral
High volume low pressure endotracheal cuff
Fenestrated tracheal tube
Passy-Muir One-way Speaking Valve
Used for patients weaned off vent but still with tracheostomy
Anti-Thrombolytic Devices
Pneumatic compression sleeves and boots
May be discontinued when patient is ambulating ad lib
Do not place on extremity with fistula, graft or suspected/known DVT
Dialysis
Only very limited PROM during dialysis
AV Graft/Fistula
Hemodialysis access for those with long term dialysis treatment
Avoid pressure
Catheters can include
Suprapubic catheter
Urinary catheter (Foley)
Texas Catheter
Rectal pouch/tube
Feeding Tubes
Keep HOB > 30 degrees when feeding is delivered, 30 min following feeding
G Tub/ PEG Tube
Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy tube (inserted into stomach)
J Tube
Jejunostomy tube
Patient at risk for aspiration (food or fluid into airway)
Dobhoff Feeding Tube
Nasogastric (terminates in stomach, can be easily dislodged, verify placement by imaging)
NG Tube
Nasogastric
Short term
Total Parenteral Nutrion
Intravenous feeding
Indicated when the GI tract is nonfunctional
Delivered through central venous catheter
Chest Tube
Used for pneumothoraxes
Fluid buildup in chest (pleural effusion)
Removes and prevents reentry of air and fluid
Intracranial Pressure Monitor
Ventricular catheter (allows CSF drainage) Used for TBI PT interventions can cause intracranial pressure
Dynamic Air Flow Bed
Used to decrease tissue compromise
Can inflate to assist in transfer to HOB
