Q

Random Access Memory (RAM)

A

A computer use RAM to hold data and
instructions temporarily while processing is
taking place using that data and program.

RAM – is therefore also called working
memory.

Q

READ ONLY MEMORY - ROM

A

ROM Chips hold data and instructions necessary
for starting up the computer when it is switched on.
It is commonly used to store system- level programs
such as BIOS (Basic Input/Output System)

Q

Erasable Programmable ROM (EPROM)

A

■ Is a ROM that can be erased and
reprogrammed, which can make it more
useful than an ordinary PROM.
■ This reprogrammed can be done by exposing the
chip to ultraviolet light of a specific frequency for a
specified period of time.

Q

Electrically Erasable PROM (EEPROM)

A

■A special type of ROM chip that can
be erased and reprogrammed
repeatedly by a user
■A chip is erased by exposing it to
an electrical charge
■EEPROM is non-volatile and can be
used to hold data and instructions
which need to be updated regularly.

Q

SECONDARY STORAGE DEVICE

A

■ Also called auxiliary or backup storage
■ It is used to store data and instruction’s when they are not being
processed.
■ Secondary storage is more permanent that main memory, since data
and instruction are retained when the power is turned off
■ It is more cheaper than primary storage, and you can have as much
secondary storage as you need
