ICT assessment Flashcards
Define protocol
Rules that allow the exchange and transmission of data between devices.
Define IP address
A unique address that networked devices use to send data to each other (device’s location on a network)
What does MAC address stand for?
Stands for Media Access Control.
Define MAC address
Universally unique identifiers given to the NIC (network interface card).
When are mac addresses used
Used for devices connected to LANs using ethernet, Bluetooth or wi-fi.
How is a MAC address made up?
It is made of up 6 pairs
The first 3 pairs make up the manufacturer
The last 3 are assigned by the manufacturer to uniquely identify the device
What are the uses of MAC addresses?
- Restricting or allowing access to a network - through MAC address filtering
- Identifying a device on a network
- Tracking a device - can check what has been accessed by a specific MAC address
- Assigning static or fixed IP addresses
Define device name
A descriptive name that helps users to identify computers on a network.
Define NIC
Network interface card - the core piece of hardware used for networking connectivity
What is the function of a cable?
Used to connect devices in a wired network
What is the function of a wireless access point?
Allows devices with Wi-Fi connectivity to connect to a wired network.
What is the function of a router?
Stores all device addresses that are connected to it so it can forward network traffic to its destination using the quickest route.
What is the function of a gateway?
Connects two different types of network
E.g. a LAN is connected to a WAN using a gateway
What is the function of a booster?
Amplifies the signal in a network so that its range can be extended
What is the function of a server?
A computer that shares its resources with connected devices
