ICPP Flashcards
1
Q
What is Multiple Sclerosis and why does it occur?
A
- This is a disease of the immune system where myelin is destroyed in certain areas of the CNS.
- Problems with conducting action potentials - decreased conduction velocity, complete block or cases where only some action potentials are transmitted.
2
Q
What does the drug D-Tubocurarine do?
A
Competitively blocks nACh receptors - causes paralysis as action potentials can’t be produced and muscles can’t contract
3
Q
What does succinylcholine do?
A
Inactivated Na+ channels adjacent to neuromuscular junction - block depolarisation and therefore muscle contraction
4
Q
What is Myesthenia Gravis?
What are the signs/symptoms?
A
- Autoimmune disease targeting nACh receptors.
- Endplate potentials are reduced in amplitude leading to muscle
weakness and fatigue - Patients suffer profound weakness that deteriorates with exercise
