do cancer vaccines exist?
yes!
HPV = cervical cancer most prevalently but it addresses several cancers
what is HPV?
human papilloma virus
which HPVs are high risk?
type 16 and 18
they are responsible for most HPV caused cancers
which HPVs are low risk?
type 6 and 11
cause genital warts, recurrent benign tumors in airways, etc.
which cancers are HPV associated with?
cervical cancer (16&18)
anal cancer (16)
oropharyngeal cancers (16)
other: vaginal, vulvar, penile (16)
what are the 3 HPV vaccines?
- gardasil = 16, 18, 6, 11
- gardasil 9: 16, 18, 6,11,31,33,52,58
- cervarix: 16&18
when should you get HPV vaccine?
BEFORE the initial exposure by sexual activity
these vaccines are almost 100% effective!!
which HPV vaccine do we give in the US?
gardasil 9
do you need patient consent to submit their data to a cancer registry?
no
it’s an automatic process
can a patient opt out of their information being submitted to the cancer registry?
they cannot opt out!
it’s a public health mandate
