the Right side will be the Default Dominant
When Left side is affected the default is
Non- dominant
Related to acute, chronic, neoplasm related, or postoperative
Pain
If the reason for the encounter is Pain Control or Management then code the
pain then cause

Chronic
Neoplasm related pain associated, due to, related to, or w/ a malignancy is coded regardless of Acute or Chronic
The sequencing is based on the documentation or reason for the visit.
Chronic Pain Syndrome is coded when
Documented by a Physician
If General Pain is NOT specified
1st- R52
When the Right side is affected the default is
Dominant
General Pain is NOT coded in the section w/ the following types of Pain
Acute, Chronic, Post-Thoractomy, Post- Procedural, or Neoplasm- related
If the underlying cause of Pain is known
DO NOT use pain codes
Pain can be listed 1st when
A pt. is admitted for the insertion of a Neorostimulator for Pain control
Pain due to Implant Grafts not coded from Ch. 6
See Ch. 19
Post- Operative Pain NOT associated w/ a specific postoperative complication
Dr. MUST assign DX
Sequence 1st- G89
Post-operative Pain associated w/ a specific postoperative complication
Dr. MUST assign DX
1st- use appropriate complication code Ch. 19
2nd- G89.18 or G89.28 (if appropriate)
Chronic Pain is coded
1st- G89.2
Used for DX related, associated, or due to CA, Primary or Secondary or Tumor, & DOES NOT have to be documented as
Acute or Chronic
Pain due to Neoplasms (CA)
1st- G89.3
Acute AND Chronic Pain are DX in the same setting sequence Acute 1st
1st- R52 or G89.11
2nd- G89
Chronic Pain Syndrome
1st- G89.0
A Neurological condition caused by damage to or
Dysfunction of the Central Nervous System (CNS)
Central Pain Syndrome (CPS)
Dr. MUST assign DX
The Central Nervous System (CNS) includes the
Brain, brain stem, & spinal cord
