When and who published the ICD?

What does the ICD include and what is it used for?
Both physical and mental disorders.
Used to monitor incidence and prevalence, it also provides information on mortality and morbidity.
What is the current version of the ICD (2023)?
ICD-11
Where is the ICD used? Is it adjusted for cultures/languages?
World Wide
Many countries use it more frequently than the DSM.
Multilingual and covers a wider variety of illnesses than the DSM, which may account for its widespread use. Also available in appropriate cultural forms.
- Makes it easier for cross-cultural diagnosis to take place. (not just pure translation but removes words with stigma and adjusts it to the culture)
What section of the ICD are mental health disorders?
F
It’s followed by a digit which denotes the type of mental health disorder they are. (F20 is schizophrenia).
These codes can be further differentiated to denote different subtypes of a disorder. (F20.1 is disorganised schizophrenia)
Gives the clinician the main features and the symptoms needed to make a diagnosis.

What was the goal of DSM 5?
To harmonise with ICD system which was not the case of previous versions
How many sections does the DSM have> What are they?
3 sections
Section 1 - explains the way the DSM is organised and includes changes that have been made
Section 2 - gives diagnostic criteria and codes. Eg criteria for SZ, depressive disorders, anxiety disorders, neuro developmental disorders
(ADHA, ASD, Tourettes)
Section 3 - information about emerging measures and models. Future diagnoses that require more research eg internet gaming disorder.
Section 3 also included cultural section involving an interview guide with questions about race, language, religion, ethnicity etc
What was a larger change from DSM-IV to DSM 5?
The removal of unnecessary or over-used categories,
Eg. autism spectrum disorder is now just 1 category instead of the previous 4.
