First character in Medical and Surgical codes
Section - general type of procedure performed
Second Character in Medical and Surgical codes
Body System - general anatomical region involved in the procedure
Third character in Medical and Surgical codes
Root Operation - the intent or objective of the procedure performed
The 1st - 3 characters are then used
to access the correct Code table in the PCS code book to complete the code build process for the 4-7 characters
Fourth character in Medical and Surgical codes
Body part - ID’s specific body part which the procedure was performed.
Fifth character in Medical and Surgical codes
Approach - technique or method used to access operative site
Sixth character in Medical and Surgical codes
Represents devices (if applicable) used as part of the procedure. If no device : code letter “Z”
