IC1 Flashcards
4 types of microbes that can cause infections
Bacteria
Fungi (yeast, mould)
Virus
Parasites
5 sterile sites in the body
Central nervous system
Cardiovascular system
Lower respiratory tract
Bone, Joint
Genitourinary tract, except urethra and vagina
What is MacConkey agar used to grow
Gram (-) bacteria
What are the 2 methods of Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing (AST)?
1) Agar / Broth dilution method
To test MIC
2) AST-Disk diffusion method
To test zone of inhibition
Definition of breakpoint
Highest concentration of drug that can be safely achieved in patient
if MIC is below breakpoint, drug is safe to use.
If MIC is above breakpoint, drug is not safe (can cause side effect). Microbe cannot be inhibited by normal safe dosages
