What type of disorder is IBS?
A
Functional bowel disorder meaning there is no identifiable organic disease underlying the symptoms

What might someone with IBS present with?
A
Diarrhoea
Constipation
Fluctuating bowel habits
Abdominal pain
Bloating
Worse after eating
Improved by opening bowels

What 3 main conditions need to be excluded for a diagnosis of IBS?
A
IBD-> negative faecal calprotectin
Coeliac-> negative Anti-TTG antibodies
Cancer not suspected

How is IBS managed conservatively?
A
Adviced to:
- ensure adequate fluid intake
- regular small meals
- reduce processed foods
- limit caffeine and alcohol
- low FODMAP diet-> with dieticians advice
- trial probiotic supplements

How can IBS be managed medically?
A
Loperamide for diarrhoea
Laxatives for constipation (but not lactulose because can exacerbate the bloating)
Antispasmodics i.e. Buscopan
TCA i.e. amitriptyline
SSRIs
