IB Bio Flashcards
What does a light microscope do?
uses visible light to detect and magnify very small objects
What does an electron microscope do?
uses a beam of accelerated electrons as a source of illumination
define “naked” in relation to prokaryotic DNA
Naked DNA is not associated with proteins
what is a micrograph?
a photo taken through a microscope to show a magnified image of an item
what is the arrangement of a nucleoid in a prokaryotic cell?
The DNA is not enclosed in a membrane, it is found freely in the cytoplasm, DNA is in the formation of a single loop, and DNA is not wrapped around proteins
what are ultrastructures?
cellular structures that are too small to be seen under a microscope. (such as prokaryotic cells)
what are the characteristics of a prokaryotic cell
circular, one chromosome, naked, plasmids may be present, no intron sequences, found in nucleoid region, one DNA replication start point
characteristics of a eukaryotic cell
Is linear, has many chromosomes, associated with histone proteins, no plasmids, intron sequences are present, it is contained in a membrane bound nucleus, and there are multiple origins of implication
describe the arrangement of plasmid DNA in a prokaryotic cell
extra pieces of small circular DNA that can be shared between bacteria, often contains a gene for antibiotic resistance
extracellular
anything outside the cellular membrane
