biology Flashcards
what is the first stage of the cell cycle before mitosis
interphase
what is the first stage of mitosis
prophase
what is the second stage of mitosis
metaphase
what is the third stage of mitosis
anaphase
what is the fourth stage of mitosis
telophase
what is the result of mitosis
cytokinesis (daughter cells)
what happens during interphase
Interphase is not part fo mitosis, it happens before mitosis. This is the part of the cell cycle were the cell is not yet divided, it van be thought of as normal cell life
what happens during prophase
The nucleus disintegrates and packs chromatin into chromosomes
what happens during metaphase
chromosomes line up down the middle of the cell
what happens during anaphase
sister chromatids separate from each other and are pulled to opposite ends of the cell
what happens during telophase
the reverse of prophase happens, each newly formed daughter cell will start its new life in interphase. So mitosis needs to be undone in order for them to be able to divide on their own
what happens during cytokinesis
this is the result of mitosis, which means there is now two genetically identical daughter cells
what happens during the cell cycle?
one cell divides to form two daughter cells that have the same exact DNA as one another
what is chromatin?
uncoiled stringy DNA
what are each of the halves of a chromosome called
sister chromatid
