This shows murdo has realised he has spent his whole life conforming but he si disatisfies and realises he never spend his life doing what makes him happy like wearing coloured clothes.
Isolation
“i could if i liked stay in bed all day and no one would notice” This shows his lack of belonging in the community emphasising his loneliness and isolation

” she neglected herself in the service of books and poetry and was considered slightly odd by the villagers”
this shows that when living in these communities anything that someone does which is out of the ordinary will be considered different by the villagers
Symbolism
” perhaps his belonging has been like the halloween mask” This symbolises how murdo is putting up an act and hiding his true self by wearing a mask of conformity
conformity
” Murdo had never in his life done anything unusual” this shows that murdo is always wanting to fit in and doesn’t stray away from what is expected
Sacrifice
” I have never had the courage to wear what i wanted to wear, for example a coloured waistcoat and a coloured jacket” This shows that Murdo had to sacrifice being able to wear the colourful things he wanted in order to fit in with the villagers dull expectations
Sympathy
” i could if i liked stay in bed all day and noone would know the difference” his shows murdos lack of belonging emphasising his loneliness knowing noone cares about him evoking sympathy for the character
Characterisation
” Murdo had never in his life done anythign unusual” This shows that murdo is characterised as someone with a lack of ambition as he continues to conform to the villagers expectations and has not been living his life to its full potential
