I-V graphs Flashcards
What are the characteristics of a fixed resistor?
The temperature remains constant so the resistance remains constant. The slope or gradient is constant and the line remains straight throughout.
What are the characteristics of a filament lamp?
As the p.d. increases, the filament lamp gets hotter, and atomic vibration increases- greater resistance. The slope or gradient decreases as the p.d. increases since resistance is increasing.
What are the characteristics of a diode?
The current only flows in one direction. There is a threshold in the forwards direction, which is why the graph is flat initially. A diode behaves like a fixed resistor- the resistance does not change. A diode has a very high resistance is the reverse direction.
