I) Phylogenetic vocabulary (Phylo Class) Flashcards
what is classification?
Scheme for data structure used to group individuals
What is taxanomy?
Science of life classification
what is systematics?
Study of diversification based on relationships
What is Phylogenetics systematics?
reconstructing the pattern of events that led to the distribution and diversity of life
What system does taxonomy use and can you name some?
- Hierachal classification system of classical binomal names.
- Domain –> kingdom –> phylum –> classes –> order –> family –>
Genus –> Species
What is cladistics?
classification that identify shared characteristics originated in the common ancestor, not by convergence.
What are clades?
Taxa groups sharing common ancestors based on evolutionary history of organisms.
what two things do clades consider/use?
- Darwins theory of descendats with modification
- Charecter modification from generation to generation
What do phylo systems represent and what are they based on, and represented by?
Phylo relationships between organisms
based on cladistics analysis
represented by cladograms (trees)
What defines a clad?
Diagnostic charecteristics
What is taxa?
a named taxanomic unit at any level.
Linnaeus hierchal class system + Darwins descendants theory, added with Taxanomy, systematics, and phylogenetics = ?
Phylogenetic systematics!
Define a Hypothetical taxanomic unit (HTU), operational taxanomic unit ( OTU) and branch, and draw a diagram.
HTU = internal node ; inferred ancestral organisms
OTU = Terminal node; Organism
Branch = Line indicating taxonomic groups (clade); relationship between OTU’s
What can be assigned to unrooted trees for roots?
Outgroups
