(i) Comparative Biochemistry Flashcards
What are comparative studies used for?
Used to study the evolutionary relationships between organisms
Describe the relation
The greater the similarity between different species-
The greater the similarity between different species, the more closely related the species are.
If a species is more closely related, what does that tell you about the common ancestor?
The more closely related the species are, the more recent the common ancestor is in the evolutionary relationship.
What is biochemistry?
Biochemistry is the study of the chemical substances and processes occurring in living organisms.
How can comparative studies in biochemistry link to evolution?
DNA and protein sequences from different species can be compared to determine how closely related different species are
How does DNA prove that living things are related?
DNA is universal
All living things use the same DNA code (same four bases), adding weight that all living things are related to each other and have evolved from a common ancestor.
What is a genome?
The complete set of DNA in each cell in an organism is called the genome.
