Hypothesis Testing Flashcards
1
Q
What is a hypothesis
A
- Your prediction of how specific variables might be related to one another
2
Q
What is a null hypothesis
A
- There will be no relationship or difference between the variables
3
Q
What us null hypothesis testing
A
- Inferential statistical tests to see whether the null hypothesis should be accepted or rejected
- Shows the probability of whether null hypothesis has occurred by chance
- High value would indicate there is high probability the results are due to chance
4
Q
Describe significance level
A
- Probability associated with inferential test called p value
- Ranges from 0-1
- Tells us whether results are significant or non-significant
- Significant = p value lower than 0.5
- Non-significant = p value is above 0.5
5
Q
Describe statistical significance
A
- These results occur when the probability of null hypothesis being true is less than 5%
- If a statistically significant difference occurs it doesn’t mean it is psychologically significant
6
Q
Describe:
- Type 1 error
- Type 2 error
A
- Rejecting null hypothesis when it is true
- When null hypothesis is accepted when it shouldn’t be
7
Q
What is probability that results are due to chance?
A
- 1 in 20, due to human error
