Hypotheses And Variables Flashcards
What is an aim?
An aim is a general statement of what the researcher wants to find out in a research study.
What is a hypothesis?
A hypothesis is a testable statement which shows predictions about the experiment.
What is an experiment?
An experiment involves the manipulation of an IV in order to measure the effects on the DV.
What is a variable?
A variable is any ‘thing’ that can vary to change within an investigation. Variables are used in experiments to determine if changes in one ‘thing’ can result in changes in another.
What is IV? (Independent variable)
IV is the variable that is manipulated by the researcher so they can measure the effect on the DV.
What is a DV? (Dependant variable)
The variable that is measured by the researcher (any effect in the DV should only be cause by the IV)
What are the 2 levels of the IV?
Control Group
Experimental condition
What is a directional hypothesis? (One tailed)
Mainly predicts the direction of the research.
What is a non-directional hypothesis? (Two-tailed)
Used if there is no previous research or if previous research contradicts each other.
What is a correlation?
A correlation is the relationship between 2 things.
Are there any IV or DV in correlations?
NO , there are only 2 co-Variables!!
What is a directional correlational hypothesis?
States the correlation between 2 variables (I.e. increase/decline, etc).
What is a non-directional correlational hypothesis?
Doesn’t specifically state the direction of correlation.
What is a null hypothesis?
When there is no specific or significant finding(s) at the end of the study (no significant changes).
Is correlation the same as causation?
NO they aren’t the same!!!!
