Hypothermia And Layering Flashcards
What are the advantages of the layering system?
- ‘wick’ moisture away from your body so you don’t get too damp.
- be able to control body temp not too cold or hot
What is the purpose of the base layer?
The base layer should not retain moisture but transport it away from the skin
What is an example of fabric used for the base layer?
Polypropylene, Merino Wool
What are examples of the mid of insulation layer?
Materials polar fleece, wool, down jackets
What is the purpose of the insulation or mid layer?
retain body heat by creating a layer of still or dead air around your body.
What is the purpose of the outer layer?
-Protection from wind and outside moisture like rain and snow.
•Getting rid of body moisture
•Protection from chafing, cuts, scrapes, and other outside damage
What are examples of outer layering?
Goretex
What is hypothermia?
A dangerous condition in which the core body temperature drops below 35° C.
What is mild hypothermia?
Mild hypothermia (33–35°C) is usually treatable.
What is severe hypothermia?
T he risk of death increases as the core body temperature drops below 32°C
What are the four types of heat loss?
Conduction
●Convection
●Evaporation
●Radiation
What are some signs of hypothermia?
Feeling cold
• Cool, pale skin
• Shivering
• Loss of concentration, poor judgment
What is the first aid action to treat hypothermia?
- Don’t massage or rub the person
- Move the person out of the cold
- Remove wet clothing
- Try to warm the person
- Wrap the person
How should you wrap a person when treating hypothermia?
- Do not apply direct heat
- Apply warm compresses
- Do not use hot water,
- Do not attempt to warm the arms and legs
What is needed to make a hypothermia wrap?
- waterproof outer layer
- sleeping pads
- sleeping bag or blanket
- head covering
- water bottles.
