Hypothalamus/Pituitary Histo Flashcards
What are the cells of the anterior pituitary divided into?
Chromophils and chromophobes.
What are the chromophils?
Endocrine cells that take up dyes. Are made up of acidophils and basophils.
What are the chromophobes?
Endocrine cells with little affinity for dyes. May be undifferentiated cells or degranulated chromophils.
What is the most abundant cell type in the anterior pituitary?
Acidophils.
What endocrine cells in the anterior pituitary are acidophils?
The somatotropes and lactotropes.
What do somatotropes secrete?
Growth hormone (GH) and somatostatin.
What do lactotropes secrete?
Prolactin (PRL).
What endocrine cells in the anterior pituitary are basophils?
Thyrotropes, gonadotropes, and corticotropes.
What do thyrotropes secrete?
TSH
What do gonadotropes secrete?
FSH and LH
What do corticotropes secrete?
ACTH
Where are basophils most concentrated?
In the pars intermedia (between the anterior and posterior pituitary) and the pars tuberalis.
What percentage of anterior pituitary cells do somatotropes constitute?
Somatotropes make up 50% of the cells.
What percentage of anterior pituitary cells do lactotropes constitute?
Lactotropes make up 15-20% of the cells.
What percentage of anterior pituitary cells do corticotropes constitute?
Corticotropes make up 15-20% of the cells.
