Hypothalamus & ADH Flashcards
1
Q
Where is the hypothalamus situated?
A
- part of the brain
- situated above the pituitary gland
2
Q
What does the hypothalamus secrete?
A
- anti-diuretic hormone (ADH)
3
Q
When does the hypothalamus release ADH?
A
- osmoreceptors in the blood vessels of the hypothalamus detect an increase in the osmolarity (low water levels) of the blood
- the hypothalamus responds and releases ADH
4
Q
What does ADH do?
A
- helps to conserve water if the body is dehydrated
5
Q
How does ADH help to conserve water?
A
- by causing more water to be reabsorbed into the blood from the collecting ducts of the kidney
- so less water is lost in urine
