Hypotension and shock Flashcards
1
Q
Shock
A
Medical emergency associated with high mortality.
2
Q
Treatment of shock
A
- Sympathomimetic inotropes and vasoconstrictors.
- Should be treated in intensive care settings.
- Invasive haemodynamic monitoring.
3
Q
Vasoconstrictor sympathomimetics
A
- Noradrenaline/norepinephrine
- Phenylephrine
Phenylephrine has a longer duration of action than
noradrenaline - excessive vasopressor response
may cause a prolonged rise in blood pressure
4
Q
Risk of vasoconstrictors
A
Although they raise blood pressure they also reduce
perfusion of vital organs such as the kidney.
5
Q
Adrenaline/epinephrine
A
- Used in CPR for cardiac arrest
- IV administration with
extreme care by specialist.
