Serum K+ <3.5
What is the main pathological effect of hypokalaemia?
Muscle weakness
Causes of hypokalaemia: GI
D+V
Eating disorders
Reduced intake
Causes of hypokalaemia: kidney
Thiazide + loop diuretics
Metabolic alkalosis
DKA - overall bodily deficit, although serum levels may remain high
Causes of hypokalaemia: increased movement into cells
Insulin
B2 agonists
Alkalosis
Other causes of hypokalaemia
Inc mineralcorticods (Conn's + cushing's) Reduced magnesium
Possible presentation of hypokalaemia
Muscle weakness, dysrhythmias, flaccid paralysis, paraesthesia, cramps
ECG changes in hypokalaemia
Flattented T waves, P widening, ST depression
How is hypokalaemia managed?
Give potassium!!
Can be given PO, or IV if severe (<2.5)
What is the maximum rate at which K+ can be infused?
10mmol/ hour
