Hypo testing Flashcards
what is a null hypothesis
nothing is happening so things like u=0 or p=0.5 or u1-u=0
what is an alternative hypothesis
somthing is happing, = > < or does not equal
alternative for a two sided
does not =
The average blood pressure of patients taking the new medication is significantly different from the average blood pressure of patients not taking the medication
alternative for a right-tailed
> The average blood pressure of patients taking the new medication is significantly greater than the average blood pressure of patients not taking the medication.
alternative for a left tailed
<, The average blood pressure of patients taking the new medication is significantly less than the average blood pressure of patients not taking the medication.
what is a test statistic
measures the distance between our observed data and the hypothesized value relative to the standard error, this quantifies the degree to which the sample data supports or contridicts the null
what is a P-vaule
ASSUMING THE NULL HYPOTHESIS IS TRUE, the p-value measures the probability of getting data at least as extreme as the data we got.
what do P-values mean
a small P-value is stong evidance against the null whereas a large p-value is evidance against the alternative
