What are the indications for Benzodiazepine?
- Short term relief of severe, disabling anxiety; occurring alone, with insomnia, or psychotic illness
- Severe, disabling insomnia
What is the protocol for withdrawal for long-term prescribed benzodiazepine patients?
- Transfer patient stepwise, one dose at a time over a week
- Reduce diazepam dose by 1-2 mg every 2-4 weeks. If uncomfortable withdrawal symptoms occur, maintain this dose until symptoms lessen
- Complete withdrawal may vary from several months to a year or more
Which 2 benzodiazepines are used as hypnotics, and have a prolonged action, and may give residual effects on the following day?
Nitrazepam and Flurazepam
