How are hypnotics grouped? Give examples of each.
Benzodiazepines (temazepam, lormatazepam, nitrazepam)
Non-benzodiazepines (Z-drugs)
- zopiclone, zolpidem
Which group of hypnotics is preferred?
Z drugs usually favoured, but not much difference between the 2 groups
What are the problems associated with hypnotics?
Potential for misuse, dependence and rebound insomnia
How should hypnotics be taken?
Use for only 2 weeks
Take only 5 days out of 7 to reduce potential for tolerance
What are the contraindications of Z drugs?
Obstructive sleep apnoea
Respiratory depression
Respiratory muscle weakness
Which antihistamine can be used as a hypnotic and what is the benefit?
Promethazine
Less potential for dependence
