What are the drugs used in ADHD?
A
CNS stimulants - methylphenidate (first line) - dextroamphetamine Noradrenaline reuptake inhibitor - atomoxetine

How is methylphenidate prescribed?
A
There is usually an immediate release (4hrs) and a sustained release (12 hours) in one tablet
Supresses appetite and therefore growth so need drug holidays e.g. at weekends when they don’t need to be at school

What are the problems with CNS stimulants?
A
Potential for misuse and dependency
Has street value
Check for substance misuse

A
Height and weight in children
Pulse

When is atomoxetine used instead of a CNS stimulant?

Patient preference
Unable to tolerate stimulants
