Hypnosis Flashcards
How is hypnosis induced?
- through suggestion
- involves social interaction [the person responds to suggestions etc]
What do psychologists believe?
that hypnosis affects some people
BUT
they are also unsure whether it produces an altered state of consciousness
What is Mesmer’s magnetic Force therapy also known as?
placebo affect (patients knew what to expect)
What did Puységur believe?
People could be treated by placing them in a sleep-like state
Who was Braid?
A physician who wanted to develop an anaesthetic
Describe Braid’s fixation technique.
- neuro-hypnology
- hypnotic analgesia - pain reduction through hypnosis
> effective for immediate/chronic pain
> self-hypnosis for post- surgical pain
Hypnosis is…
…a willing and cooperative state in which you give your behaviour control to the hypnotist + accept distorted reality
What did Orne & Evans (1965) suggest?
That hypnotised individuals commit dangerous acts
Describe the Orne & Evans experiment
exp #1
- participants told to put hand in acid
- told to fling in experimenter’s face
- when they left the hypnotic state, they denied the actions
exp #2
- participants told to pretend to be hypnotised
- they committed the same as group 1
What are the psychological effects of hypnosis?
- EEGs show you’re in a relaxed state
- normal HR + breathing
What are the behavioural effects of hypnosis?
- intensely focused attention
- sensory input is NOT blocked

What 2 components affect hypnotic susceptibility?
- Suggestibility
> if a hypnotist makes a suggestion do we follow it? - Absorption
> ability to become absorbed in an experience/thought
What theories tries to explain the altered state?
SOCIAL INFLUENCE THEORY + DIVIDED CONSCIOUSNESS
