hyperventilation & decompression sickness Flashcards
1
Q
what is hyperventilation
A
- a condition which occurs when excessive CO2 is expelled from the body as a result of breathing too rapidly
2
Q
what symptoms of hyperventilation is it similar to
A
hypoxia
3
Q
how can you fix hyperventilation
A
breathing into a paper bag or talking aloud
4
Q
what is decompression sickness
A
- inert gases (mainly nitrogen) are released rapidly from solution in the body tissues & fluids as a result of low barometric pressure
5
Q
what is the most common result of decompression sickness
A
joint pain ( the bends)
6
Q
how to prevent the bends after scuba diving up to 8000’
A
wait at least 12 hours after diving that does not require a controlled ascent (non-decompression stop diving) for flights up to 8000’
7
Q
how to prevent the bends after scuba diving above 8000’
A
wait 24 hours for flights above 8000’ or after any diving that required a controlled ascent (decompression stop diving)
