S/S of Hyperthyroidism
A
- weight loss
- increase appetite
- tachycardia, palpitations, increase BP
- diaphoresis ( excessive sweating)
- exophthalmos ( bugged eyes)
- goiter

What causes hyperthyroidism?
A
- too much TSH produced by the anterior pituatary gland

Labs that help indicates hyperthyroidism
A
- elevated T4

A
Thyroid storm is uncontrol hyperthyroidism d/t Grave’s Disease

S/S of Thyroid storm
A
- tachycardia
- agitation
- HTN
- anxiety
*same s/s as hyperthyroidism but amplified

Drugs to treat Thyroid storm
A
- Propylthiouracil (PTU)
- Methimazole

NI:
- exophthalmos–>
- Thyroidectomy–>
A
- artifical tears, sunglasses, annual eye exam
- Post-op unexpected outcome laryngeal edema
- tracheostomy kit
- O2 and suction
- Ca gluconate
check for bleeding
check airway
keep drainage devices compressed and empty
Watch out for Hypocalcemia
monitor Trousseau/Chyostek (because of the removal of the parathyroid)
monitor Ca+ level

- high protein, high calorie
- low caffeine
- low fiber
