Hypertensive Flashcards
What is optimal blood pressure
Systolic: <120 Diastolic: <80
What is normal blood pressure?
Systolic: 120-129 Diastolic: 80-84
What is high normal blood pressure
Systolic: 130-139 Diastolic: 85-89
What is Grade 1 (Mild) Hypertension blood pressure?
Systolic: 140-159 Diastolic: 90-99
What is Grade 2 (Moderate) Hypertension blood pressure?
Systolic: 160-179 Diastolic: 100-109
What is Grade 3 (Severe) Hypertension blood pressure?
Systolic: >=180 Diastolic: >=110
What is Isolated systolic hypertension blood pressure?
Systolic: >140 Diastolic: <90
Would you exercise if blood pressure at rest is **Systolic: >180 Diastolic: >110
Yes if: Diagnosed Hypertensive and on medication. Proceed with an extended warm up and re-assess BP
No if: BP remains elevated post warm up or no HTN diagnosis
Would you exercise if blood pressure at rest is **Systolic: <180 Diastolic: <110
Yes, but be aware:
- Patient can commence exercise as prescribed
- Use clinical judgement and discus with supervisor with assessment of clinical history to establish if further monitoring is required during exercise
- Use best practise guidelines to guide education and follow up with client if required.
If blood pressure is Systolic: >=170 at submaximal workload of moderate intensity. What would you do?
- Discuss with the supervisor and communicate with the client
- Letter to the GP
- Assume presence of uncontrolled high BP
- Proceed with exercise If symptom free and BP controlled at rest
Would you exercise if blood pressure at rest is **Systolic: >250 Diastolic: >115
No! CEASE EXERCISE
What questions would you ask to verify abnormal blood response?
- Assess compliance with medication
- Assess potential stressors pre-session
- Assess smoking status and caffeine intake (what time was last?).
