What is the drug therapy for a patient who is younger than 55 years old with Hypertension?
An ACE inhibitor, may use Angiotensin II receptor antagonist if ACEi intolerant
What is the drug therapy for a patient who is 55 years old or older or Afrocaribbean with Hypertension?
Calcium channel blocker
Thiazide like diuretic
Why are patients of African or Caribbean descent less able to tolerate ACEi?
Lower levels of renin
What is the suggested second line drug treatment for Hypertension?
ACEi & Calcium channel blocker
Or
ACEi & Thiazide like diuretic
What is the suggested third line drug treatment for Hypertension?
ACEi & Calcium channel blocker & Thiazide like diuretic
If third line drug treatment cannot control Hypertension, what add on therapy can be used?
More diuretics
Alpha blockers
Beta blockers

What are some of the symptoms of Hypertension?
Generally no symptoms. Can get; Headaches Blurred/double vision Epistaxis Tiredness SOB
What are some of the complications of uncontrolled Hypertension?
Stroke MI Renal disease (CKD) DVT/Embolism Aneurysms
