Hypertension Flashcards
What is hypertension?
Cardiovascular problem where blood exerts a higher than normal forcer on the blood vessel walls (increase in blood volume and decrease in vasodilation)
What can hypertension affect?
Heart, kidneys, brain, eyes
Mechanical causes for hypertension
Increase stroke volume
Increase peripheral resistance
Symptoms for severe hypertension?
Blurred vision, confusion, headaches
What are factors that increase BP?
Stress, exercise, smoking, caffeine
What are causes for secondary hypertension?
Pregnancy (increase blood volume) Contraction of aorta Stress Physical inactivity Smoking High alcohol intake High salt, fat intake Obesity
Causes of high BP in children
Obesity, malnutrition, family history
How does blood pressure respond to aerobic exercise?
Systolic increases by 30-60 mmHg but diastolic does not change
Reductions of only ______mmHg in SBD and DBD can decrease risk of stroke by ____ and _____, and decrease risk of coronary artery disease by ____ and _____
- 2
- 14% and 17%
- 9% and 6%
What are the effects of moderate weight reduction at rest and during exercise BP in people that are overweight?
At rest: decrease in both SBP and DBP
During exercise: decrease in SBP and DBP (but more in SBP)
