What blood pressure should be treated for hypertension?
All who are greater than 160/100
If 150/95 the decision depends on risk of coronary events
What is malignant hypertension?
A rapid rise in blood pressure causing direct damage to the blood vessels e.g. visual changes from vascular haemorrhages
What is essential hypertension?
This is cause unknown 95% of the time
What are the secondary causes of hypertension?
It can be caused by:
- Renal
- Endocrine
- Others e.g. coarctation
What is the treatment goal of hypertension treatment?
less than 140/90
130/80 in diabetics
150/90 in over 80s
What are the drugs used to treat hypertension?
If older than 55 or black then use calcium channel blockers first
If younger than 55 then use ace-I e.g. lisinopril
Then add a thiazide e.g. chlortalidone
Then add beta blocker e.g. bisoprolol
What is an example of an arb?
Candesartan
