Hypertension Flashcards
How does hypertension affect the rest of the circulatory system?
Having hypertension means that peripheral resistance is high, this means cardiac output needs to increase to pump the same volume of blood round the body. This means the heart is constantly working HARDER at rest to achieve the same perfusion. Therefore you are at increased risk of stroke, heart disease, renal disease, visual failure and death.
What is defined as a high blood pressure?
If the blood pressure is consistently measured above 140/90 mmHg it is considered pathological
What medications are prescribed for hypertension?
Beta blockers and calcium channel blockers relax vascular smooth muscle.
ACE inhibitors
Angiotensin II receptor blockers
Loop diuretics
