Hypersensitivity reactions Flashcards
What is Type I hypersensitivity?
Immediate hypersensitivity - localised or systemic allergic reaction
What mediates Type I hypersensitivity?
IgE binding to Basophils and Mast cells
Examples of Type I hypersensitivity?
Asthma
Anaphylaxis
Hay fever
What is Type II hypersensitivity?
Direct cell killing, tissue specific
What mediates Type II hypersensitivity?
Complement activation by IgG or IgM
Examples of Type II hypersensitivity?
ABO incompatibility
What is Type III hypersensitivity?
Immune complex reacton
Mechanism of Type III hypersensitivity?
Immune complexes are deposited in the tissues, where they activate the complement system, causing generalised inflammation
Examples of Type III hypersensitivity?
Lupus
Extrinsic Allergic Alveolitis
Rheumatoid Arthritis
What is Type IV hypersensitivity?
T-cell mediated delayed hypersensitivity
Mechanism of Type IV hypersensitivity?
T cells over-stimulation by antigen causes cytokine production, leading to inflammation and tissue damage.
Examples of Type IV hypersensitivity?
contact dermatitis
TB
Graft-vs-host disease
Type 1 diabetes
