Hypernatraemia Flashcards
1
Q
What are the causes of hypernatraemia?
A
Hint - gain, H20 loss (renal vs non)
Gain of Na
- ingestion - feed, TPN, saline, Sodybic
- water excretion - extra-renal loss (sweating, Burns, hypervent, diarrhoea) Or renal loss (central or nephro DI, diuretics, mannitol or hyperglycaemia)
2
Q
What is the difference between glucocorticoid and mineralcorticoid hormones?
A
Gluco - mobilise sugar in stress e.g presnisolone, dexamethasone, hydrocortisone
Mineral - retain Na, leads to production of aldosterone, thereby retaining Na and H20 and losing K+ and H+
3
Q
What disorders lead to excess mineralcorticoid activity?
A
Hint - Con, ren, paeds, straie
Primary hyperaldosteronism (Conns)
Hyperrenism
Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia
Cushing’s syndrome
