Hyperlipidemia treatment Flashcards
Statins
1) MOA
2) Effect
3) Side-effects
1) HMG- CoA Reductase inhibitors.
2) Most potent. Best at decreasing LDL cholesterol levels.
3) Myopathy, Diabetes, Haemorrhagic stroke.
Fibrates
1) MOA
2) Effect
3) Side-effects
1) Interaction with PPAR (TF that regulates lipid metabolism).
2) Most effective at reducing TG levels. Also decreases VLDL prod, Increasing Hepatic LDL uptake, and increasing HDL slightly.
3) GI disturbance and elevated liver enzymes.
Nicotinic acid effects?
Best at increasing HDL.
Bile Acid Sequestrants
1) MOA
2) Effect
3) Side effects
1) Prevent BA’s being reabsorbed. Therefore, BA are depleted=> Decrease in hepatic cholesterol=> Increase in LDL cholesterol receptors on the Liver.
2) Decrease LDL.
3) Bloating and dyspepsia. Interfere with drug absorption.
