Hyperlipidaemias Flashcards
what happens when blood lipid levels are raised?
increased risk of atherosclerosis (hardening of arteries)
what happens when lipids are absorbed into the blood vessel wall?
- an inflammatory reaction is given off
- this forms a plaque
- leads to clot formation and so stops blood flow to brain and heart
what are lipids transported in the body as?
lipoproteins
what are the names of the two lipid pathways?
exogenous and endogenous
where is lipid found
diet
where are bile acids made
in liver cells
how do the bile acids help the lipids
-emulsify lipids in small intestine
are lipids water soluble
no
and so bile acids break apart the lipids
without bile acids, lipids would remain as clumps
what do lipids get absorbed into the form of
proteins - chylomicrons
where do cholesterol and triglycerides get absorbed?
absorbed from intestine
where do the chylomicrons get absorbed into?
lymphatic system
what do the proteins on the chylomicrons do?
bind to receptors on tissue walls of muscle and fat
what does the lipoprotein lipase do?
hydrolyses triglycerides
in chylomicrons
are free fatty acids produced?
-yes, they get absorbed and stored
if there is an excess of cholesterol, where is it taken up?
-hepatocytes
