hyper/hypo/iso Flashcards
what is extracellular fluid?
fluid on the outside of the cell
what is intracellular fluid?
fluid inside the cell (cytoplasm)
what is a hypertonic solution?
a solution that has MORE solutes than another solution (water moves out of cell and cell shrinks up)
what is a hypotonic solution?
a solution that has LESS solutes than another solution (water moves into cell and cell swells)
what is an isotonic solution?
a solution that has the same amount of solutes as another solution (water moves in and out of cell at the same rate
why is it bad if cells grow too big?
not enough substances will be able to cross the membrane fast enough to accommodate the increased cell volume
what does the cell do if it is growing too big?
it splits into smaller cells to maintain the optimum surface area to volume ratio
