Corns
cone shaped thickening of epidermis caused by continuous pressure over bony prominences
Calluses
usually found over bony prominences in the weight bearing part of the foot; heel, soles, plantar surfaces. cover a wider area than corns but not painful
Tinea pedis
athlete’s foot; a fungal infection of the skin; aggravated by moisture accumulation in unventilated shoes.
sx: burning skin with blisters, scaling, cracking, especially between the toes.
contracted by walking barefoot in public showers
ingrown toenail
Caused by improperly trimming toenail or wearing poorly fitting shoes.
Toenail grows inward into soft tissue around it.
Sx: swollen, inflamed, painful. may need to be surgically removed
Foot odor
microorganisms interact with perspiration to create odor.
Plantar warts
painful growths caused by virus. often develop under pressure points such as heel, ball of foot
Pressure ulcers
cause by unrelieved pressure that impairs the circulation. usually occurs over bony prominence.
bed ridden patients: on back of heels, ankles, and great toes common
Bunions (Hallux Valgus)
progressive disorder; begins with enlargement of first metatarsal joint at base of great toe and progresses to leaning of the big toe. gradually changes angle of bones.
Sx: characteristic bump
Etiology: tight fitting shoes, genetics, arthritis
deciduous teeth
first set of teeth; between 6 mom and 2 yrs. total 20 teeth.
permanent teeth
32 total. come in between 6-12 yrs
