Cold
32-79 degrees
Used for: acute inflammation
Tepid
79-92 degrees
Used for: exercise, or acute inflammation if patient cannot tolerate colder water.
Neutral warmth
92-96 degrees
Used for: open wounds, pts. With circulatory, sensory or cardiac disorders and decreases tone.
Mild warmth
96-98 degrees
Used for: increase mobility in burn patients
Hot
99-104 degrees
Used for: control pain
Very hot
104-110 degrees
Greater then 110 should not be used.
Used for: increase tissue extensibility and chronic conditions.
Contrast bath
Warm water temp= 100-110
Cold water temp= 50-64
Used for: chronic edema, subacute edema, PVD, sinus congestion.
Effects are improved circulation via vasodilation/vasoconstriction and pain relief.
Local immersion (WP and contrast bath) contraindications and precautions
Contraindications
Excessive bleeding and maceration.
Precautions:
Impaired thermal sensation, infection in area, confusion, recent skin grafts or new granulation tissue.
Full body immersion
Aquatic pool or WP Hubbard tank
Contraindications:
Excessive bleeding, maceration,cardiac instability, infectious conditions, bowel incontinence, epilepsy or suicidal pts.
Precautions: local immersion ones plus, after alcohol consumption, limited strength, UI, fear of water, respiratory problems,
*in hot very hot water: pregnancy, MS, poor thermal regulators.
