Hydrosphere Vocabukary Flashcards
Amplitude
Height of wave
Tidal Range
The difference between the high and low tide in a day
Gulf Stream
A large, swift warm equatorial waters northward and moderate climate
Polar Molecule
Molecule in which one end is partially positive and the other is partially negative
Drought
Long period of lower than normal rainfall for a particular region
Pathogens
Organisms that cause disease
Drip Irrigation
Method in which a small amount of water is delivered directly to an individual plant, usually through pipes or tubes
Headwaters
Where a stream begins: usually in mountains
Tributaries
Smaller of two streams that join together to make a longer stream
Basin
All of the land that is drained by a river system or when rocks bend downward in a circular system
Divide
A ridge that separates one water basin together
Continental Divide
A divide that separates water that goes into a different ocean
Biodiversity
Variety of life in one ecosystem
Biomass
Total mass of living organisms in a given region
Salinity
Measure of the amount of dissolved salt in water; average salinity in ocean is 3.5 percent
Bioluminescence
Production of light by a living organism through a chemical reaction
Intertidal Zone
Part of the shore that’s below water at high tide and above water at low tide
Neritic Zone
Part of the ocean where the continental shelf gradually slopes seaward; sunlight can penetrate the bottom in much of the Neritic Zone
Water Column
Vertical column of ocean water, divided into different zones according to their depth
