Hydrosphere + Ocean currents (practical) Flashcards
what is hydrosphere
all bodies of water on earth, eg. lakes and seas
which two main currents
surface/warm currents and deep/cold currents
ocean currents effects for surrounding continents or why do we need ocean currents
ocean currents regulate global climate, helping counteract the uneven distribution of solar radiation reaching earths surface, ocean currents move heat and nutients around world oceans
warm currents
warm currents are shallow and less salty, that makes the currents less dense so the water moves to the surface
cold currents
cold currents are deep and salty, so currents are very dense and the water sinks down
ocean conveyor belt is also known as?
thermohaline circulation
the ocean conveyor belt…
is caused by the differencein water temperature and salinity (haline). The conveyor belt is a system in which the water moves between the cold depths amd warm surface in oceans throughout the world
where do the currents move
the currents that begin near the equator (warm currents) move to the poles and vice versa
what are the importants currents
equatorial current, gulf stream and antarctic circumpolar
where does the equatorial current go
it goes towards north and south america from asia on the equator line
where does the gulf stream go
it goes above the nordic countries from the atlantic ocean
where does the antarctic circumpolar go
it goes beneath the continents towards australia
why is the gulf stream the most significant
the gulf stream is the most significant current considering europe because it carries warm water northeast across western europe making northern europe warmer
