Hydrosphere 2 Flashcards
What is a river basin?
The land that water flows across or under on it’s way to a river
Which river basin is Raleigh located in?
Neuse River Basin
What is the difference between river basins and watersheds?
Watersheds are smaller parts of the river basin
Water flows in which direction?
From the highest to lowest point
Where does water go after it drains from a river basin?
Into a river
What is a vegetative buffer?
Plants & trees surrounding a river or stream to prevent erosion
Permeable means that
Water and soil particles can travel through it easily
Impermeable means that
Water and soil particles can’t get through at all
What is Water quality?
A term used to describe the health of a water system
Bioindicators
The living organisms in a water system that are linked to the water quality
Dissolved oxygen
The amount of oxygen dissolved in a water system
Nitrates
The amount of nitrogen compounds in a water system
Turbidity
A measure of the clarity of water
pH
The measure of how acidic or basic a substance is
When the temperature is high, the DO level is
Low
When the temperature is low, the DO level is
High
What is a Pfiesteria
A microorganism that releases toxins under certain circumstances that eats away flesh and kills fish
What is water pollution?
Addition of any substance that has a negative effect on the water or living things that depends on the water
What is stewardship?
Responsibility for conserving and restoring the earths resources for future generations
Treating surface water
1) check turbidity 2) add chlorine 3) alum added to make floc 4) clean floc out 5) water goes thu black coal and light brown sand filters 6) kept in a well before being released as city water
Treating waste water
1) goes thru filters to catch large trash 2) goes into settling tanks where all the waste will settle out 3) goes thru bed of gravel with bacteria to eat up the waste 4) then it will be kept in a pool to purify it with sunlight and air
What is bioremediation?
Using microorganisms to clean up pollution (eat up oil spills)
