1 to 2 mg IV or IM Q4-6 hours

Hydromorphone indications
Moderate to severe pain
Hydromorphone physiologic action
Binds to opiate receptors in the central nervous system altering the perception of, and response to painful stimuli. Also produces generalized CNS depression and suppresses the cough reflex
Hydromorphone side effects
Hypotension Confusion sedation dizziness constipation
Hydromorphone nursing implications
Assess blood pressure, pulse, and respirations prior to and after administration of med
Assess bowel function routinely; implement constipation prevention with increased intake of fluids and bulk
Assess pain
May increase amylase and lipase
Hydromorphone teaching
Change positions slowly to minimize orthostatic hypotension
Avoid alcohol and other CNS depressants
TCDB every two hours to avoid atelectasis
Emphasize importance of constipation prevention
Hydromorphone contraindications
Paralytic ileus
respiratory depression
hypersensitivity
