Hydrological Disasters Flashcards
Flood areas have of risk
Lowland
Coastlines
Mountain valleys
River deltas
Causes of floods
Heavy precipitation
Hurricane storm surges
Tsunamis
Snowmelt
Infiltration
The process in which water enters the ground
Percolation
The action of water moving through or being filtered through the ground
Runoff
Water unable to enter the ground and flowing off the surface
Floodplain
Area of flat low lying ground adjacent to a river formed mainly of river sediments and subject to flooding
Slab
A mass of snow that is put into motion as a unit when the avalanche is released. Slavs form as a result of heavy snow or wind
Weak layer
Made of unstable snow that can easily collapse under stress. Result of day to day weather condition
Sliding surface
A layer of strong smooth snow under the weak layer that’s provides a surface on which the avalanche can move on. Forms well in advance.
Slope angles 30-45 degrees
Best for avalanches
Wind
Wind blown snow contributes to the formation of the slab
Temp
High or low contributes to formation of weak layers
Precip
Large snowfalls followed by rain create sliding surfaces
Afforestation
Active control triggering
Starting zone structures
Avalanche zoning
Architecture defences
Deflective structures
Snow sheds
