Unit Three- Meteorlogical Disasters Flashcards
What is weather?
The current atmospheric conditions
What is climate?
Long-term weather trends in particular region
What is meteorological hazards?
A hazard is a short-lived, extreme weather and atmospheric conditions
What is the atmosphere?
The envelope of gases that surround the earth
What is a hurricane?
A rotating low pressure system with the same maximum winds of at least 74 mph or 119 km/h
What is a hurricane characterized by?
Intense, rainfall, high winds and storm surge flooding
What is the storm surge?
Arising of the sea level as a result of change in atmospheric pressure and winds from the storm
What is wind?
The movement of atmospheric gases as a result of changes in air pressure
What is the first step for hurricanes form?
The ocean must be 29°C
What happens after the ocean is at the correct temperature for making hurricanes?
Dry air, evaporates, warm water rising high up rising air, condenses creating clouds and wind and wind pushes it across the water that is being sucked up and spins under the Corla effect
What is coriolis effect?
The apparent deflection of moving air due to the rotation of the planet
Why do hurricanes boomerang?
They directed by the properties of the atmosphere high-pressure systems push the low pressure hurricane around itself
What is a northeaster?
An intense snowfall, freezing rain and rain event at rotates counterclockwise, and the shaped like a comma
How is northeastern formed?
It draws moisture from a warmer ocean when it reaches land, it cools and condenses creating frozen
What does meteorology?
The science of studying processes and phenomenon in the atmosphere
What is an air mass?
A body of error with uniform properties of temperature and moisture
What is the jetstream?
A narrow band of fast moving air occurrence from West East
What is low pressure?
Air rising cooling creating precipitation
What is high-pressure?
Air is falling, warming, creating clear conditions
How are storms created?
Air masses move with the jet stream and go towards low pressure. Cold air is dents and moves along the ground, forcing warm air higher, rising masses. create storms.
What is the first step to tornadoes forming?
The rising air gathers speed and begins to move much quicker than the air ground level
What is the second step to tornadoes forming?
The previous step creates windshield which acts to rotate the air horizontally
What is the third step creating a tornado?
If conditions are correct, the rotation will turn vertical in spot a funnel cloud when it reaches the ground it is a tornado
